Mike Callaghan '13 to Begin Third Pro Season in Europe, Second in Spain in 2015-16
Mike Callaghan '13 will be returning to Spain for his second season with Convervas De Cambados Xuven and his third overseas. The club is based out of Cambados, in the province Galicia, on the Atlantic Coast.

"I'm extremely excited to be playing my third year as a pro and hope to have a great experience on the basketball court for Xuven and in the community," Callaghan said.

In his inaugural season with the Spanish side, Callaghan averaged 6.47 points per game and 3.53 rebounds per game. The 6-5 versatile forward played in 17 games last season, starting in eight.

Callaghan finished in the top three on the club in three-point field goal percentage (36.6) and free-throw percentage (88.5). He scored a season-high 20 points in a 71-67 win over Amics Castello on Feb. 28, 2015.

A Madison, Conn. native, Callaghan helped Xuven to a seventh place finish (of 15 teams) in Spain's Leb Silver, and an overall record of 16-12.

Callaghan's first season overseas was a statistically dominant one in Ireland, where he played for Moycullen Basketball Club of the Irish Premier Basketball League (IPBL). The former Cardinal led the IPBL in both points per game (26.2) and rebounds per game (14.9).

The 20th member of the Wesleyan men's basketball 1,000-point club, Callaghan qualified for three NESCAC tournaments over his four years on campus. As a junior in 2011-12, Callaghan was part of the winningest season in program history (20-6 record).

"I think Wesleyan prepared me to play internationally, because I was able to do a lot of things for Coach [Joe] Reilly as a player," Callaghan said. "I wasn't restricted to a specific role and Coach Reilly valued overall player development. This way I was able to improve all aspects of my game.

"Off the court, Wesleyan's diverse, accepting student body allowed me the opportunity to meet people of different cultures and backgrounds. I think Wes does a great job of preparing students for real world experiences."

Wesleyan will begin its 2015-16 season Fri., Nov. 20 vs. Lyndon St. in the fourth annual Herb Kenny Tip-Off Tournament in Middletown.  The Cardinals will be looking to defend their NESCAC title with the entire starting lineup and top six players returning from the 19-9 NCAA Tournament squad of 2014-15.
