The Wesleyan University men's basketball team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign. Entering a ninth season under head coach Joe Reilly, this year's Cardinals will face a 24-game slate made up of formidable non-conference opponents and the usual NESCAC gauntlet.
Southern Maine will be the first test for the Cardinals, as the Huskies come to Middletown Friday, November 18 for the Herb Kenny Tip Off Tournament. Wesleyan will also welcome Western New England University and Wheaton College.
Thanksgiving weekend will include a trip to the Rochester Institute of Technology Tournament. The Cardinals will face off against Hartwick College - a 2015-16 NCAA tournament team - on Saturday, November 26 before facing either RIT or Summit the following day.
December marks the beginning of Little Three play, as the Cardinals welcome rival Williams College to Middletown for a non-conference showdown on Saturday evening, Winter break kicks off in sunny Florida as the Cardinals head to the Daytona Beach Shootout on Tuesday, December 20 and Wednesday, December 21. The first matchup will be against Washington & Lee, while the second will be against Marietta College of Ohio. Washington & Lee plays in the highly competitive Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Marietta finished 25-4 last season, and made a second straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.
NESCAC play opens in January, as the Cardinals travel to defending champion Middlebury Friday, January 6 to open the conference slate. Eleven of the Cardinals' games will be played at home this season, as Wesleyan looks to continue its success in the friendly confines of Silloway Gymnasium. Last year's squad went 10-2 at home.
The Cardinals finished 18-7 overall last season, and 5-5 in conference play to make an appearance in the NESCAC Tournament for the fifth time in the past seven years.
