Men’s Basketball Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University men's basketball team earned its first-ever at-large bid to the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships, and will play Union College (16-10) in the First Round on Friday, March 3 in Rochester, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.


The Cardinals, who boast a 19-6 overall record and spent most of the season ranked in the Top 25 poll, return to the national postseason tournament after a year removed. It is also just the second time ever that Wesleyan has qualified for the NCAA Championships.

The team's impressive 2016-17 regular-season featured three wins over top-10 programs; No. 4 Marietta (81-65), No. 5 Amherst (73-59) and No. 8 Amherst (73-72, OT). The Cardinals also finished 6-4 in the ultra-competitive NESCAC to earn the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament.

The first and second rounds will take place Friday, March 3 – Saturday, March 4, followed by sectionals Friday, March 10 – Saturday, March 11. The semifinals and finals of the NCAA Tournament will take place Friday, March 17 – Saturday, March 18 in Salem, Va. at the Salem Civic Center. A team from the NESCAC has appeared in the championship game in five of the last 10 years.
