MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University men's basketball assistant coach Max Sass has been recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and was named a 2016-17 Under Armour 30-under-30 honoree, as announced Tuesday by the NABC.
The NABC recognized 30 up and coming young coaches in men's college basketball across the country, in all divisions. Sass was the only assistant coach from the NESCAC to be honored.
"We are proud of Max receiving this very prestigious award", said Head Coach Joe Reilly. "Max has been an exceptional representative of Wesleyan University and Cardinal Basketball the past two years. It is great to see his hard work recognized. He is a tireless recruiter, has an impressive feel for the game, and gives maximum effort every day to help provide a first-class athletic experience for the members of our team."
Sass, who is in his second season with the program, has seen unprecedented success as a member of Reilly's coaching staff. In 2016-17, the Cardinals opened the campaign with 11 consecutive wins and finished 19-7 overall, while ranking in the top-25 for most of the year. Wesleyan, who finished 6-4 in the ultra-competitive NESCAC, returned to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history by earning its first-ever at-large berth. Additionally, the team's 19 wins fell one shy of tying a program record.
