MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Freshman guard Austin Hutcherson of the Wesleyan University men's basketball team has been named the 2018 D3hoops.com Northeast Co-Rookie of the Year alongside Hamilton Forsythe of MIT.
Hutcherson, who was also named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, excelled in his first season donning the Wesleyan uniform. The 6-6 guard from Freehold, N.J. played in all 29 games for the Cardinals and made 26 starts while averaging 12.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. Hutcherson shot 44.3-percent from 3-point range, 41.8-percent from the floor, and 82.6-percent from the foul line. He also ranked fourth in the NESCAC in 3-point percentage, fifth in minutes (813), sixth in 3-pointers made (54), seventh in assists (79) and steals (35), and ninth in blocks (23).
He scored in double-figures 16 times and had a breakout game in the First Round of the NCAA Championships in which he went off for 33 points on 13-of-17 shooting including 7-of-9 from downtown. He also grabbed six rebounds, dished out six assists, and recorded two steals to help guide Wesleyan to a commanding 101-71 win over Southern Vermont inside a packed Silloway Gymnasium.
Hutcherson played a pivotal role in the Cardinals' historic season in which they won a program-record 22 games en route to a 22-7 overall record, an outright Little Three title, a NESCAC finals appearance, and an NCAA Second Round appearance.
