Chris Potter, a 1993 graduate of the University of Connecticut, enters his 16th season as the head coach for the men's ice hockey program at Wesleyan in 2018-19. He is a full-time faculty member with the rank of adjunct associate professor, and was also head coach of the Cardinals’ golf team from 2003-2014.

During his tenure at Wesleyan, Potter, has been named a two-time NESCAC Coach of the Year honoree (2004, 2007), and has powered the program to a trio of winning seasons. During the 2016-17 campaign, the seventh-seeded Cardinals advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since the 2010-11 year with a 5-4 upset win over second-seeded Colby.

During the 2010-11 season, Wesleyan defeated top-seeded Hamilton, 5-2, in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, collecting the program’s first-ever playoff win in the NESCAC. The Cardinals have qualified for the postseason nine times under Potter’s watch, and compiled a 9-6-4 conference record during the 2006-07 season, which led to the program’s first-ever home playoff game in the NESCAC Tournament.

Prior to his stop in Middletown, Conn., Potter was an assistant ice hockey coach and recruiting coordinator at Brown University from 1998-2003. He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater from 1996-98. For three years following his graduation, he was a member of the Roanoke Express in the Southern Division of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Roanoke was affiliated with the San Jose Sharks of the NHL during his playing days.

Potter, who earned a master’s degree from UConn in 2003, has been involved with USA Hockey-Team New England since 1997 in various roles, including as an instructor, assistant coach and as a head coach in 2001-02. During his playing days at UConn, he was a four-year ice hockey letter winner, an All-American as a senior, and a two-time All-ECAC and All-New England selection.
