MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Following a historic 2017 season—in which the Cardinals posted a 20-2 overall record and reached the NCAA Semifinals—the Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team earned the No. 1 ranking in the 2018 Nike/US Lacrosse Division III Men's Preseason Top-20 poll as announced by US Lacrosse Magazine.
The Cardinals reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championships a year ago for the third time since 2006. After a season-opening loss at Bates (15-14), Wesleyan rattled off 20-consecutive wins including a NESCAC title en route to the Final Four. The 20 wins in a row were the most by any team in any division last season.
Despite the loss of Ted Bergman '17 to graduation—who was named the top goalie in Division III in 2017—the Cardinals return the majority of their roster from last year. Headlining the unit is First Team All-American Harry Stanton '18, Second Team All-American Taylor Ghesquiere '18, and All-American Honorable Mentions Ben Shively '18, Christian Barker '19 and Carter Hawthorne '19.
The 2018 season gets underway Saturday, March 3 at Little Three rival Williams. The first home game of the year will pit the top-ranked Cardinals against No. 14 Bates on Saturday, March 10.
