MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Eleven members of the nationally-ranked No. 10 Wesleyan University men's tennis team will compete at the three-day, 2016 ITA New England Regional Championships at Williams College beginning Friday, Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 2.
The tournament will be played outdoors at the Torrence M. Hunt Tournament Courts, and will move indoors to the Lansing Chapman Rink and the Towne Field House, both on Williams' campus, if inclement weather occurs.
Senior co-captain Michael Liu, juniors Steven Chen and Tiago Eusebio, sophomore Joachim Samson, and freshman Jonathan Holtzman are all scheduled to compete in singles play. Chen, a two-time All-American, enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after finishing the 2015-16 season as the 12th-ranked player in the nation. Having reached the finals as a freshman, and the semifinals a year ago, Chen looks to continue his strong play as he eyes his first regional title.
In the doubles draw, Chen will be paired up with junior Maxwell Smith. Also competing for Wesleyan will be seniors Greg Lyon and Jake Roberts – who earned a first round bye and are seeded No. 9 – as well as Samson and freshman Princeton Carter, and senior Cameron Hicks and junior Cameron Daniels.
The singles and doubles winners will advance to the national tournament at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. from Friday, Oct. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 16. Several Cardinals are also set to compete at the MIT Invitational next weekend to wrap up the fall season. Wesleyan begins its dual-match play March 17, 2017.
