Men's Tennis Continues Strong Start With 9-0 Win Over Wilkes

MIDDLETOWN, Conn.— Ten different Cardinals scored wins on Sunday as Wesleyan defeated Wilkes University 9-0 in the first outdoor home match of the season.  The match was the definition of a team victory, with contributions coming from the entire squad, highlighted by sophomores Adrian Roji and Ali Mooraj, who both won in both singles and doubles.

  • The Cards got on the board quickly with an 8-0 win at #1 from Roji and freshman Noah Lilienthal, who moved to 7-1 as a duo with the win.

  • They were followed shortly thereafter by junior Princeton Carter and Ali Mooraj, who were also very solid in an 8-1 win at #2.

  • Finishing off the doubles sweep were sophomores Andrew Finkelman and Zach Fleischman, who were 8-4 winners at #3.

  • Mooraj and junior Jon Holtzman were the most dominant performers in singles, as each won 6-0, 6-0 at #4 and #5 respectively.

  • Roji and freshmen Zach Lieb and Max Lee all won in an efficient manner, with none of the three dropping more than four games in their matches at #2, #3, and #6.

  • Freshman Peter Anker was challenged at #1 by Courtney Murphy, a former All-American singles player who advanced to the round of 16 at the 2017 NCAA Singles Championships. Anker dug deep and proved to be the stronger player in the critical moments, getting through in two tough sets 6-3, 7-6(4).

Wesleyan's next match is the first of many NESCAC showdowns coming up over the next month. Conference play begins for the Cardinals on Thursday when they host Connecticut College at 4:00 PM.
