Lilienthal & Roji Triumph Over Johns Hopkins, Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A trio of Cardinals competed in the 2019 NCAA Individual Championship on Friday. Andrew Finkelman played in the round of 32 singles play, while duo Noah Lilienthal and Adrian Roji competed in the doubles competition.

SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Finkelman faced off against Hayden Cassone of Emory in their first and only meeting of the year. Down 3-2 in the first set, Finkelman battled back to triumph 6-4. In the second set, Finkelman trailed 3-0, before slicing the deficit to one (3-2), but eventually fell 6-4 to force a third set. In the final set, Cassone triumphed 6-4 to advance.

DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Lilienthal and Roji battled Johns Hopkins' duo Joseph Cartledge and Austin Gu for the first time this year. Knotted 2-2 in the opening set, the Cardinal pair took a 4-2 lead, but the Blue Jay's cut it to one (4-3). The Wesleyan duo won two-straight games to triumph 6-3.
  • In the second set, the Cardinal tandem jumped out to a 4-2 lead before Cartledge and Gu cut the Wesleyan advantage to one (4-3), but the Cardinals were patient, slowly increasing the lead to triumph 6-4.
  • With the victory, Lilienthal and Roji advance to an NCAA Quarterfinal Doubles match on Saturday, where they will face Skidmore's Noah Williamson and JT Wynne at 4:30 p.m.
