MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Isaiah Bellamy of the Wesleyan University wrestling team has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Co-Wrestler of the Week for his stellar performance at the RIT Invitational.
Bellamy helped guide the Cardinals to a second-place finish at the 11-team tournament, in which he won the heavyweight title with a perfect 4-0 mark. He opened the tournament with two first period pins and then beat Kade Andrews of SUNY Oswego in the semifinals by major decision, 10-1. In the finals, Bellamy defeated two-time All-American and currently the No. 3 wrestling in the country, James Bethel of SUNY Oneonta, by pin in 4:17.
The Bozrah, Conn. native is off to an incredible start to his senior season. He's a perfect 13-0 with 11 pins and has won all three tournaments he has competed in.
Wesleyan returns to the mats Saturday, Jan. 6 and will compete in three dual-matches at Trinity against the Bantams, WPI and Roger Williams. The first match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
