MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University wrestling team is off to a strong start to the 2017 season and is earning national recognition for its success as the Cardinals rank No. 20 nationally in the NCAA Division III polls. Additionally, Isaiah Bellamy '18 is the No. 3 ranked heavyweight in Division III and Devon Carrillo '18E is the fifth-ranked wrestler in the country at 197.
Four teams from the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA), including Wesleyan, rank in the top-20. Johnson & Wales is the No. 1 team in the country while Roger Williams sits at No. 18 and WPI ranks No. 19. The Cardinals will face both Roger Williams and WPI in their first competition after break in a quad match at Trinity College (Jan. 6).
Bellamy's senior season is off to an incredible start as he pinned James Bethel of SUNY Oneonta – the previous No. 3 wrestler in the country – at the RIT Invitational to win the heavyweight title. He's a perfect 13-0 this season with 11 pins, and has won all three tournaments he's competed in.
Carrillo, a two-time NCAA qualifier, has won two titles at 197 so far this season. His lone loss was in the championship match of the Roger Williams Tournament.
Together, the duo has helped guide Wesleyan to a Doug Parker Invitational title and a second-place finish at the RIT Invitational. The Cardinals also rank No. 18 in the D3wrestle.com poll, and after a month-long break, the team will return to the mats Saturday, Jan. 6 to compete in the quad meet at Trinity before returning to the Budd Whitehill National Duals the following weekend at Lycoming College.
