    Marco Gaita of the Wesleyan wrestling team has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week following a stellar performance at the Ted Reese Invitational on Saturday.

    The Wesleyan wrestling team excelled on Saturday at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Maine, as the Cardinals finished fourth overall in the 15-team field. Wesleyan had five place-winners on the day with two champions in Tristan Stetson at 133 and Marco Gaita at 174. Additionally, Gaita won "The Most Outstanding Wrestling Award" of the tournament.
  • Wrestling Excels at Doug Parker Invitational, Finishes Fifth With Six Placers

    The Wesleyan wrestling team excelled on Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational as it finished fifth overall out of 15 teams. Six Cardinals placed as Marco Gaita highlighted the day by placing third at 174 while Roy Forys earned the “Most Falls Award” at 165 with four pins in his five victories.

    The Wesleyan wrestling team opened its 2019-20 season this weekend at the two-day Roger Williams Invitational. The Cardinals finished 11th in the 17-team field with 63 points.
  • Four Cardinals Earn Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team Honors

    MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Four Cardinals were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large First Teams for District 2 as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday evening. The 2018-19 awards are selected by CoSIDA and recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletics and in the classroom. Carter Hawthorne (men’s lacrosse), Zach Murillo (wrestling) and Tim Sestak (men’s ice hockey) were awarded spots on the 13-person First Team, while Victoria Yu (women’s tennis) was one of 11 females selected for the honor.
  • Wesleyan Wrestling Earns Several NEWA and NWCA Postseason Awards

    Several members of the Wesleyan University wrestling team earned postseason awards this week as the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) announced its end-of-the-year laurels and the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released its academic honors. Highlighting the list for the Cardinals was Zach Murillo who was named the NEWA Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, as well as an All-NEWA Second Team selection, an NWCA Division III Scholar Athlete award winner, and an All-NEWA Academic Team honoree.
  • Zack Murillo Records Impressive Win at NCAA Wrestling Championships, Finishes 1-2

    Zack Murillo of the Wesleyan wrestling team won his first bout at the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Friday at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Va., hosted by Ferrum College. However, the senior lost his next two matches and has been eliminated from the national tournament.

    Senior Zack Murillo of the Wesleyan wrestling team will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships this weekend at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Va. The tournament will take place March 8-9, with action beginning on Friday at 11 a.m.
  • Murillo Qualifies for NCAA Championships; Four Others Place as Wesleyan Finishes 11th at Regionals

    Senior Zack Murillo of the Wesleyan wrestling team continued his sensational season this past weekend at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, taking second place in the 125-pound weight class. As a result, Murillo will make his first appearance at the NCAA Division III National Championships in two weeks in Roanoke, Virginia. Sophomore Simon Chee was the next highest finishing Cardinal, taking fifth in the 197-pound weight class, helping to push Wesleyan to an 11th-place finish in the 17-team field.
  • Wrestling to Compete at NCAA Northeast Regionals this Weekend

    The Wesleyan wrestling team will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24 in the Wildcat Center on the campus of Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I.
  • Kirchberger Takes Third at 165 at NEWA Futures

    The Wesleyan wrestling team took a short road trip to Trinity College on Sunday to compete in the NEWA Futures Tournament. Tucker Kirchberger highlighted the day as he went 5-1 en route to a third-place finish in the 165-pound weight class. Kirchberger worked his way back from an early loss and defeated the top two-seeded wrestlers in his weight class in impressive fashion.
  • Murillo Defeats Number One Wrestler in Country, Wrestling Splits Duals on Senior Sunday

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team celebrated its seniors on Sunday afternoon in Silloway Gymnasium  The Cardinals faced tough competition in New England College and the University of Southern Maine, while taking the time to highlight the career achievements of seniors Zack Murillo, Shane Ross, James Matias, Dylan Jones, and Karl Seitz.

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team competed in a tri-meet on Sunday hosted by sixth-ranked Ithaca College in the Ben Light Gymnasium. The Cardinals wrestled against Ithaca, Williams, and SUNY Oneonta while Roy Forys, who wrestled at 165, continued an impressive season with a 3-0 record for the day.

  • Wrestling Places 10th at Budd Whitehill Duals

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team went 2-3 overall at the Budd Whitehill Duals, hosted by Lycoming College, to finish 10th overall. The two-day event took place at Lamade Gym as the Cardinals went 1-2 on Day 1 followed by a 1-1 performance on Saturday, with victories over SUNY-Cortland (20-19) and Little Three rival Williams (31-9).

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team opened the new year with a strong showing at the Scott Viera Open hosted by Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals led the way with six finalists, three champions, three runners-up, and a third and fourth place finish.

    The Wesleyan University wrestling team, led by Roy Forys and Zack Murrillo, placed fifth overall out of 16 teams at the RIT Invitational on Saturday. The Cardinals scored 86 points and placed ahead of Williams who finished sixth with 82. WPI won the tournament followed by John Carroll and RIT.

    Roy Forys was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday, hosted by Springfield College, as he helped lead the Wesleyan wrestling team to a sixth-place finish out of 17 teams. Forys won the 165-pound title to claim the award.

    Several members of the Wesleyan University wrestling team earned postseason awards this week as the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) announced its end-of-the-year laurels and the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released its academic honors. Highlighting the list for the Cardinals on the mat were First Team All-NEWA selections Devon Carrillo ’17 and Isaiah Bellamy ’18, and Honorable Mentions Amir Daouk ’20, Zach Murillo ’19, James Matias ’19, Carter Armendarez ’18 and Dominic Pirraglia ’18. In addition, six Cardinals were named 2017-18 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, 14 were named to the Academic All-NEWA Team, and Wesleyan earned a NWCA Scholar Team award.
  • Bellamy and Carrillo Earn All-America Honors at NCAA Championships; Bellamy Places Third at 285

    Senior Isaiah Bellamy took third-place at 285 and graduate student Devon Carrillo claimed eighth at 197 as the Wesleyan University wrestling team finished 18th overall at the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the Cleveland Public Auditorium. By placing in the top-eight, both wrestlers earned All-America status to mark the first time in program history that the Cardinals had two All-Americans in the same year. Additionally, Bellamy’s third-place finish is the highest all-time at the national tournament by a Wesleyan wrestler.
  • Bellamy, Carrillo Advance to Quarterfinals of NCAA Tournament

    Senior Isaiah Bellamy and graduate student Devon Carrillo of the Wesleyan University wrestling team have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, while senior Dominic Pirraglia has been eliminated from the postseason. Bellamy, who went 2-0 earlier in the day, and Carrillo, who won his lone afternoon match, will compete in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. in the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • Three Wesleyan Wrestlers to Compete at NCAA Championships

    Three captains of the Wesleyan University wrestling team—Isaiah Bellamy ’18, Devon Carrillo ’17E and Dominic Pirraglia ’18—have qualified for the 2018 NCAA Division III Wresting Championships which will take place Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10 at the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. Baldwin Wallace University and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission will serve as the host for the national event.
  • Three Cardinals Qualify for NCAA Championships as Wesleyan Places Third at Regionals

    Graduate student Devon Carrillo and senior Isaiah Bellamy of the Wesleyan wrestling team continued their dominance this weekend at the 2018 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by WPI as the duo claimed the 197-pound and heavyweight titles, respectively, to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Additionally, senior Dominic Pirraglia qualified as well by taking third-place in the 174-pound weight class as the trio helped the Cardinals take third overall in the 17-team field.
