Wesleyan Tennis Knocks Off Two Top-10 Teams as Men Defeat No. 5 Trinity (Texas), 6-2, and Women Defeat No. 10 Washington (Mo.), 7-2

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Wesleyan University tennis teams enjoyed arguably the best day in program history as both the men and women defeated top-10 opponents Monday. The 23rd-ranked men's squad earned a 6-2 win over No. 5 Trinity (Texas), while the 17th-ranked women's team claimed a 7-2 victory over No. 10 Washington (Mo.) University.

Wesleyan Men: 4-2

  • The Cardinals earned their third win in a row to improve to 4-2 in dual matches.
  • They went 2-1 in doubles play as Michael Liu '17 and Steven Chen '18 earned an 8-5 win on the No. 2 court over Paxton Deuel and Clayton Niess.
  • Sam Rudovsky '16 and Joachim Samson '19 claimed No. 3 doubles as they defeated Mayer and Lameth, 8-3.
  • In singles play, Liu earned another victory as he claimed the No. 1 position by scores of 7-5, 7-5 over Adam Krull.
  • Wesleyan also earned wins from Tiago Eusebio '18, Samson and Dhruv Yadav '18 from No. 3, 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
  • Eusebio earned wins of 6-3, 6-1 against Wilson Lambeth.
  • Samson had a difficult match against Niess in which he claimed the first set 7-6 (3), before taking the second set, 6-3, and Yadav cruised to wins of 6-2, 6-0 over Kevin Lee.


  • Wesleyan went 2-1 in doubles action and 5-1 in singles play en route to its third consecutive dual match win as the Cardinals remain perfect in 2015-16.
  • Eudice Chong '18 and Aashli Budhiraja '18 claimed an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles over Jamie Silverberg and Grace Deering.
  • In No. 2 doubles, the duo of Nicole McCann '18 and Victoria Yu '19 defeated Rebecca Ho and Kate Lee by a score of 8-3.
  • Wesleyan cruised in the top of the lineup in singles action as Chong claimed No. 1 singles and Yu took No. 2 singles. Chong defeated Ho 6-1, 6-0, and Yu earned wins of 6-2, 6-3 over Silverberg.
  • Budhiraja won both sets from No. 4 singles as she defeated Aly Coran, 6-1, 6-2.
  • In No. 5 singles, McCann cruised to victories of 6-1, 6-4 over Kaylan Griffith.
  • Dasha Dubinsky '18 claimed the first set from the No. 6 position, 6-4, before dropping set two, 6-4. The sophomore rebounded, however, to take the third set against Lee by a score of 10-7.


  • Both the Wesleyan men's and women's programs return to the northeast and will play at Middlebury Saturday, March 19. The men are scheduled to play at 10 a.m., while the women will play shortly after at 1 p.m. match.
