MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Victoria Yu '19 of the Wesleyan University women's tennis team was named the 2016 ITA Women's Northeast Region Rookie of the Year Wednesday, when the Division III national and regional award winners were announced at the 2016 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Yu excelled in her first season with the Cardinals. After posting an overall record of 17-4 in No. 2 singles, she earned a Second Team All-NESCAC selection and was named the singles alternate from the Northeast region in the NCAA individual championships.

From April 17 to April 30, Yu won six consecutive matches with wins over Vicki Ip of No. 7 Amherst and 42nd-ranked Mina Karamercan of No. 17 Tufts. In the fall, the freshman advanced to the finals of the USTA/ITA New England Regional Championships where she met teammate Eudice Chong '18.

Yu was instrumental in Wesleyan's historic season, in which the Cardinals ranked No. 8 in the country and earned at-large bid to the NCAA Championships for just the second time in program history. Wesleyan went 1-1 in the tournament, and also won it's first-ever NESCAC Championship match against No. 6 Bowdoin, in which Yu – paired with Aashli Budhiraja '18 in doubles action – earned an 8-3 win to help the Cardinals cruise to a 5-1 victory.
