Chong, the No. 1 seed in singles play, defeated Briana Hartmann of Gustavus Adolphus (6-1, 6-1) yesterday and followed that up with another convincing victory in the semifinals Friday as she cruised past fourth-seeded Claire Handa of Chicago by scores of 6-2, 6-1.
The three-time singles national champion will play third-seeded Ysabel Gonzalez Rico of Emory tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. in the finals. The winner automatically qualifies for the ITA Fall Nationals against Division I winners in Indian Wells, Calif.
Additionally, Chong and Yu claimed a semifinals win in doubles action as well. The top-seed, who defeated NYU's Flyora Shiyanova and Coco Kulle (6-3, 6-2) in the first round Thursday, followed that up with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kate Daugherty and Esther Bowers of Southwestern today.
With the win, Chong and Yu will play for the doubles title tomorrow at 1 p.m. against third-seeded Bridget Harding and Gonzalez Rico of Emory. If they win, they will play again at 5 p.m. against the Division II, NAIA and JuCo winners for a chance to qualify for Indian Wells.
