ROME, Ga. – Wesleyan women's tennis duo Sophie Henderson and Kristina Yu finished runner-up in the 2019 ITA Cup doubles competition, while all six Cardinals earned All-American accolades. This was the third-straight year that the No. 1 Wesleyan women's tennis team qualified for the ITA Cup, as all of its players earned a spot by finishing as finalists in the ITA Regional Championship.

"It was awesome to have so many of our players not only qualify for the ITA Cup, but to play at on the national stage," expressed head coach Mike Fried. "Heading into the spring with six All-Americans and several others competing at this level is very excited. I am proud of how we competed this fall and look forward to seeing where we are next spring."

The ITA Cup features four divisions (DII, DIII, NAIA and JUCO) of collegiate tennis, each playing within their own respective bracket. The champions of each division qualify for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, where they all compete in the same tournament as the nation's top Division I players.

  • New England regional champions and No. 2 seeds Henderson and Yu topped Carnegie Mellon's Lindy Cornwall and Bin Zheng 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round, before taking down Emory's Emma Cartledge and Defne Oclay 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the duo topped CMS tandem Crystal Juan and Anna Kern 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the finals. In the title match, the tandem fell to CMS's Allen and Leong 0-6, 3-6.
  • In the opening round, Caitlyn Ferrante and Venia Yeung eased to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 3 seed Carnegie Mellon's Danna Taylor and Courtney Ollis. In the quarterfinals, the duo topped Chicago tandem Claudia Ng and Perene Wang 6-3, 6-2. The Wesleyan pair saw their title run fall short in the semifinals, falling to CMS tandem Allen and Leong 4-6, 4-6. The CMS duo went on to win the tournament against fellow teammates Henderson and Yu.

  • Wesleyan's Serim Jin, the second seed of the tournament, went the distance in her rookie debut at the ITA Cup, finishing in the semifinal round. Jin began with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ginger Valentine of Gustavus Adolphus in the opening round. In the quarterfinals, Jin won her first set 6-3, before advancing after her opponent was forced to retire. In the semifinal round, Jin fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripp's (CMS) senior All-American Catherine Allen 1-6, 3-6.
  • Katie Fleischman took down No. 1 seeded Taylor of Carnegie Mellon in a three-set battle (6-4, 5-7, 6-2) in her opening round match. In the quarterfinals, Fleischman again had a three-set affair, but fell to Lauren Park of Chicago 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

  • The ITA Cup marks the conclusion of the fall season for Wesleyan. The defending National Champions return to action in March when they begin their dual-match schedule and title defense.
