Derek Tenney enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Wesleyan baseball program in the 2027 campaign.
Tenney played collegiate baseball at the University of Hartford (2020-22) and the University of Nevada (2023-24). In three years at Hartford, Tenney led the team in multiple hitting categories including batting average, hits, extra-base hits, and home runs. He started all 38 games in 2021, batting .303 with nine homers, five doubles, 32 RBI, and 25 runs scored. Tenney followed with a .323 season in 2022, starting 47 of 48 games in which he appeared, totaling 63 hits with 10 home runs, 13 doubles, three triples, 31 RBI, 37 runs scored, 15 stolen bases, and 14 walks.
Tenney transferred to Nevada and played two years for the Wolf Pack in 2023 and 2024. He hit .232 in 23 games (all starts) in 2023 with five doubles, four home runs, and 13 RBI before finishing his collegiate career hitting .244 with six doubles, five homers, 21 RBI, and 20 runs scored in 2024. For his collegiate career, he finished with 152 career hits with 29 home runs while primarily playing third base with some time spent at first base.
In his post-graduate years, Tenney founded and directed the first summer hitting program at PFA Sports, where he worked with 12 athletes and helped send three players to college including Division I commits for Mississippi State and UC Santa Barbara. He also served as head coach for the Five Star (perfect game) U18 level travel team based in Newington, Connecticut. Tenney leads all aspects of Connecticut’s premier travel baseball programs, including practice planning, game management, and player development.
