Stone Maynard Tennis House
Constructed in 1924, the property at 151 Vine Street—now known as the Stone Maynard House—began as a modest 1,000-square-foot Craftsman-style three-bedroom home in a historically working-class neighborhood. Wesleyan University purchased the property in 1990 and used it as student housing for more than a decade. The houses along Vine St. were taken offline in the early 2010s due to their location and condition. Given this building’s layout and proximity to the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts, the University identified it as a candidate for an adaptive reuse project. Beginning in the winter of 2024, the University undertook renovations to convert the house into locker rooms and meeting space for the tennis teams. The centerpiece of the renovation is a 500-square-foot covered porch that provides an accessible entrance to the building. Inside, the house features a central meeting room and kitchenette flanked by team locker rooms with attached restrooms. A publicly accessible restroom for spectators is also available directly off the covered porch. Overall, the renovation advances several University goals, including improving the experience for athletic teams, spectators, and event staff; and reinvesting in existing buildings to increase their utility and utilization.
