Women's Soccer Falls to Vassar 1-0 in Non-Conference Action

Vassar College Women's Soccer Senior Lucy Brainerd scored the game's lone goal at 84:16, en route to a 1-0 win over Wesleyan University in Poughkeepsie, NY Tue. Oct. 6. With the victory Vassar improves to 7-3-1 on the season and, Wesleyan drops to 4-4-1. The Cardinals are1-2-1 in NESCAC play.

The match appeared to be heading into overtime with the teams playing evenly into the 85th minute.

Vassar gained a possession in its offensive zone, and freshman Dahlia Chroscinski played a ball to Brainerd on the far left side 18-yard box.

Brainerd hit a long right-footed shot to the top right corner that beat the Wesleyan sophomore keeper, Meghan Hanan who retreated back and attempted to punch it out, but the ball went over her head and into the net to give the Brewers the one goal advantage.

The Cardinals' best opportunity came in the 55th minute. A sliding foul in the box gave the Wesleyan's senior Madeline Keane a penalty shot. Keane struck the ball well, but it sailed high and the game remained 0-0.

Vassar held a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half. But the Cardinals rebounded to win the shot battle in the second, 8-3. Each team also generated six corner kicks, with Wesleyan having five in the second half.

Hanan finished with five saves in the defeat, while Keane had the only two shots on goal for the Cardinals.
