Laura Mead Scores as Wesleyan Women's Ice Hockey Loses a Close One to Sacred Heart 2-1

The Wesleyan Women's Hockey (1-1) team suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Sacred Heart in a close 2-1 game Tuesday night.

Sacred Heart (1-3) opened the scoring with a first period short-handed goal by Casey Stathopoulos at 6:14. The Cardinals spent a good amount of time in the Pioneers end of the ice, but were unable to sneak any shots by goaltender Nicole Magee, who made 16 first period saves. The Cardinals played great defense as well, killing off three Pioneer power plays.

The second period was highlighted by great defensive play, especially by both starting goaltenders. Wesleyan's goaltender, Corinne Rivard '16, played an excellent game, making a total of 34 saves in the game.

Sacred Heart brought their lead up to 2-0 on a power play goal by Cassandra Hanlon at 8:06. Wesleyan finally got on the board with just over five minutes remaining with a goal by Laura Mead '16 which was assisted by Ellery Sarosi '17 and Cici Frattasio '18. The final few minutes provided a flurry of action as the Cardinals attempted to tie the game, but were unable to sneak one in past Magee who had 37 saves in the game, and the Cardinals fell to the Pioneers 2-1.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday November 29 against College of the Holy Cross at home. Puck drops at 2pm.
