Women's Basketball has Four Players Score in Double Digits, but The Cardinals Fall to Williams 62-81

Middletown, Conn. - The Wesleyan University Women's Basketball team took on Little Three rival, the Williams Ephs, on Saturday afternoon at Silloway Gym. The Cardinals, who came in on a four game winning streak, were unable to defeat Williams, as they fell to the Ephs 62-81 despite having four players score in double figures. Senior Kaylie Williams, Junior Danielle Gervacio, Sophmore Maeve Vital and Freshman Tara Berger all had double-digit scoring performances. 

The Ephs got out to a fast start, going on a 11-3 run to begin the game. The Cardinals were able to gain some momentum as  Berger was able to score five of the teams 11 points in the first quarter. Williams went into the second quarter with a six point lead at 11-17.

The second quarter brought on more scoring as the teams battled for control of the game. Upperclassmen were able to lead the way for both teams in the quarter, as Ephs senior Katie Litman scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. For the Cardinals, Gervacio scored four points, grabbed two rebounds and got two steals in the quarter. The Ephs went into the half leading 27- 37. 

The Ephs began to pull away in the third quarter as they outscored the Cardinals 13-25 in the 10 minute frame. 

Wesleyan played their best basketball of the day in the fourth quarter, with Berger and Gervacio leading the way by recording six points each in the period. Wesleyan outscored Williams 22-19 in the quarter, but the Cardinals could not overcome the Ephs lead and fell 62-81. 

For the Ephs, Cavney finished with a game high 29 points Litman finished with 11, and Sophomore Amanni Fernandez finished with 14.

For the Cardinals, Berger finished with a double-double as she scored a team high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Vitale added 11 points, while Williams and Gervacio each contributed 10 points. 

The Cardinals now fall to 6-2, while the Ephs remain undefeated at 8-0. Wesleyan returns to action against Springfield College on Saturday January 2nd at the Naismith Tournament.
