Brenna Diggins Scores 17 as Women's Basketball Defeats Rivier 80-40

Middletown, Conn. - The Wesleyan Women's Basketball team (6-1) defeated visiting Rivier (4-5) 80-40 on Wednesday, thanks in part to high scoring games by  Junior Brenna Diggins, 17 points, and Sophmore Maeve Vitale, 12 points.

The first quarter was low scoring, with the teams combining for 19 points. Diggins led the Cardinals in scoring, as she scored six of the Cardinals' 13 points in the quarter. Wesleyan held a 13-6 lead after one.

In the second, Wesleyan continued to dominate Rivier on both ends of the court. The Cardianls held the Raiders to 22% shooting in the first half. Wesleyan was able to build up a 17 point lead at one point in the quarter, and they would go into halftime leading 32-15. For the Radiers, Junior Savanna Butterfield was the leading scorer with eight first half point. Wesleyan was lead by Diggins who had 14.

The Cardianls came out on fire in the second half as they opened up a 36 point lead in the third quarter. Rivier was not able to get a bucket until the 5:59, when Freshman Kaylee Kacavas hit a three-pointer which brought the Wesleyan lead to 42-18. That didn't derail Wesleyan as they went on another run and got their lead up to 36 with :32 left in the third. They would go into the fourth leading 61-25.

The Cardinals controlled the fourth quarter and would get their lead up to a game high of 46 at the 4:51 mark. The Cardinals would go onto win the game 80-40.

For the Cardinals, Diggins and Vital lead the scoring with 17 and 12 respectively. Senior Kaylie Williams contributed eight points and six assists while Sophmore Maddie Bledsoe had seven points. Rivier was lead in scoring by Butterfield, who finished with 15 and Freshman Kaylee Kacavas who also had 15.

Wesleyan returns to action this Saturday December 12 at 1 p.m. against Williams at Silloway Gymnasium.
