Women's Basketball Falls to No. 10 Tufts on the Road, 64-42

MEDFORD, Mass. – Tara Berger '19 scored a team-high 14 points, but the Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to No. 10 Tufts University on the road Friday night, 64-42.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Jumbos used a strong second quarter performance to help claim a 31-18 lead at halftime, and never looked back.
  • Berger scored 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting, while also going 8-of-10 from the foul line. She grabbed six rebounds, alongside Kaylie Williams '16 to lead all Cardinals. Williams was second on the team in scoring with eight, and Maeve Vitale '18 dished out a game-high three assists and recorded three steals.
  • Michela North led Tufts with a double-double performance as she scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Melissa Baptista added nine points and five boards, and Emma Roberson and Lauren Dillon dished out three assists each.
  • Both teams recorded 39 rebounds, but Tufts outscored Wesleyan in the paint, 30-16.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trailing by four early in the first quarter, the Cardinals retaliated with a 7-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from Williams.
  • At the 3:45 mark, the home team regained a lead after a lay-up by North as they went ahead, 13-11.
  • Tufts took a five-point lead at the 1:17 mark before a lay-up by Chynna Bailey '19 cut the deficit to three as the Jumbos claimed a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.
  • The next 10 minutes were all Tufts as it went on a 9-0 run to take a double-digit lead.
  • Wesleyan was unable to get within single digits the rest of the half as the Jumbos took a 31-18 lead at the break.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tufts continued to roll and increase its lead in the second half.
  • The Jumbos pulled away with a 10-0 run early in the third and outscored Wesleyan, 20-12 in the quarter.
  • Despite an even contest in the fourth, the deficit was too large to overcome for the Cardinals as they dropped a difficult away game, 64-42.

UP NEXT

  • Wesleyan remains on the road and will play at Bates tomorrow. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
  • Tufts stays at home and will host Conn. College at 3 p.m.
