Second Half Rally Falls Short as Wesleyan Falls to Bates, 59-53

LEWISTON, Maine. – Maddie Bledsoe '18 scored 17 points and Kaylie Williams '16 added 15, but the Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to Bates College on the road Saturday afternoon, 59-53.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bledsoe led all Cardinals with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and also grabbed five rebounds. Williams scored 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting and was an impressive 7-of-8 from the foul line. She was also two rebounds shy of a double-double and finished with a team-high eight. Danielle Gervacio '17 led Wesleyan with a game-high five assists and Chynna Bailey '19 recorded four.
  • Bates was led by Nina Davenport who scored a game-high 19 points while recording seven rebounds. Bernadette Connors joined her in double-figures with 10 and nine boards, and also dished out a team-high four assists.
  • Despite the loss, Wesleyan held an advantage in several categories – rebounding (43-36), assists (14-12), second chance points (14-2), points in the paint (32-14) and bench points (23-13).

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Cardinals jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the game, but Bates responded with an 8-0 run to go ahead.
  • With the Bobcats railing by two in the closing seconds of the first quarter, Emily Freedland hit one from downtown with just :09 remaining as Bates took a 14-13 lead after one.
  • The second quarter featured more back-and-forth action, but Wesleyan was unable to regain a lead.
  • A lay-up by Lauren Gaj at the 1:41 mark cut the deficit to one (26-25), but a pair of three-pointers by Bates just 29 seconds apart gave the home team a 33-27 lead at the break.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Cardinals put together a strong third quarter performance.
  • After a jumper by Linda Herlihy increased Bates' lead to seven (42-35), Bledsoe converted on a three-point play which eventually led to an 8-0 Wesleyan run. Williams capped off the stretch with a jumper just :08 remaining in the third to put the Cardinals ahead entering the fourth quarter, 43-42.
  • With 5:51 remaining in regulation, Bates regained the lead following a lay-up by Allie Coppola, and the Bobcats never looked back.
  • The home team outscored Wesleyan in the final 10 minutes of action, 17-10 en route to the six-point win.

UP NEXT

  • Wesleyan returns to Silloway Gymnasium Tuesday, Jan. 26 and will host non-conference foe Johnson and Wales. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m..
  • Bates is back in action Saturday, Jan. 30 and will host Tufts at 3 p.m.
