Springfield, Mass. - It was a battle of the Cardinals, as the Cardinals of Wesleyan University battled the Cardinals of SUNY Plattsburgh on day two of the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic on Sunday. The game featured a double-double for two players, Senior Kaylie Williams of Wesleyan and Senior Devona Paul of Plattsburgh St. The Cardinals of Plattsburgh were able to come out victorious with a 68-59 victory to improve to 6-3, while Wesleyan falls to 6-4 on the year.
Plattsburgh took the lead in the first quarter, and never looked back leading from start to finish. Plattsburgh was able to keep Wesleyan at bay offensively, holding them to just 27% shooting from the field. Plattsburgh would go into halftime holding a ten point advantage at 33-32.
Plattsburgh would build their lead up to 20 at the 4:18 mark in the third. Plattsburgh State was led by a trio of veterans: Paul had a 23 point, 14 rebound double-double, Senior Stephanie Linder added 16 points and five boards while graduate student Misha Green chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
The fourth quarter was Wesleyan's best quarter as they outscored Plattsburgh 23-17 and were able to get the once 20 point lead down to nine. Wesleyan was lead by Freshman Chynna Bailey who scored a team high 13 points. Sophomore Maddie Bledsoe was second on the team with 11 points, while Williams scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Bledsoe was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Wesleyan returns to action on Friday January 8th at 7 p.m. as the travel to Middlebury College in their first NESCAC conference game.
