The Lead: The No. 24 Wesleyan University women's squash team defeated No. 26 William Smith College 5-4 Saturday in its first match of the day, but fell short to No. 16 Bates College 6-3 in Day 1 of the Wesleyan Round Robin.
WILLIAM SMITH MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan claimed positions one, two, four, five and seven.
- In the top of the lineup, Laila Samy '18 swept Gabrielle Fraser by scores of 11-4, 11-4 and 11-1, and Abigail Smith '17 took the No. 2 position in a five-set thriller against Michaelann Denton, 11-2, 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8.
- Ali Imperiale '19 edged Delaney Teceno by scores of 13-11, 11-8 and 12-10 in the No. 4 spot.
- In the No. 5 position, Josephine Russ '20 took a 3-1 victory over Djenba Ballo by marks of 11-8, 11-6, 7-11 and 11-8.
- Freshman Nina Premutico swept the No. 7 position against Stacy Maceda, 11-4, 11-9 and 11-6.
BATES MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan won the No. 1, No. 7 and No. 9 spots.
- Samy went 2-0 on the day as she swept Kristyna Alexova in the top spot by scores of 11-2, 11-5, 11-8.
- The No. 7 spot featured a five-set thriller as Nina Premutico '20 edged Katie Bull, 3-2. With back-to-back 11-9 wins, Premutico took a 2-0 lead in the match but Bull responded with wins of 11-7 and 11-5 to force a decisive fifth set. Premutico walked away victorious with an 11-8 win to claim the match.
- Sofia Melian-Morse '20 swept Nubia Beasley-Bartee in the No. 9 position by scores of 11-3, 11-9, 11-2.
