Williams Scores 14 on Senior Day but Cardinals Lose to Colby, 64-48

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – In her final game of her collegiate career, senior forward Kaylie Williams fell one rebound shy of a double-double as she scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but the Wesleyan University women's basketball team lost to Colby College Saturday afternoon, 64-48.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mules used a strong second half surge to defeat the Cardinals, despite Wesleyan holding a 41-35 edge in rebounds and 26-24 advantage in points in the paint.
  • The Cardinals were led by Maeve Vitale '18 and Williams, who scored 15 and 14 points, respectively. Vitale went 5-of-6 from the floor and Williams shot 6-of-9. Chynna Bailey '19 recorded two blocks and five rebounds, and Maddie Bledsoe '18 grabbed eight boards and scored six points.
  • Wesleyan shot 33.3% (18-54), while Colby went 35.2% (19-54) from the floor.
  • Mia Diplock led all players in scoring as she dropped 23 points, while Carylanne Wolfington joined her in double-figures with 11. Wolfington also grabbed seven boards.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Williams came out strong to start the game in her final appearance as a Cardinal. She scored the team's first seven points, and hit a three-pointer at the 6:31 mark to give the home team a 7-6 lead.
  • Wesleyan led by as much as four points in the first quarter but a lay-up by Kaitlyn McCrum with :51 remaining in the frame cut the deficit to two as the Cardinals held a 15-13 advantage after one.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets often in the second quarter. Wesleyan held a lead until the 2:01 mark as a three-pointer by Carylanne Wolfington capped off a 5-0 Colby run.
  • Trailing by three in the closing seconds, a lay-up by Vitale with :25 remaining cut the deficit to one at the break as the Mules held a 31-30 lead.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tara Berger '19 knotted the game at 33-33 early in the second half, but after a three-pointer by Diplock seconds later, the Mules regained a lead and never looked back.
  • Colby went on a 6-0 run to close out the third quarter as they lead 44-36 with 10 minutes to play.
  • Wesleyan got within seven twice in the fourth, however, Wolfington hit one from downtown to give the visitors a double-digit lead (52-42) with 5:01 to play.
  • Colby continued to increase its lead down the stretch en route to the 64-48 win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Prior to the start of Saturday's game, Welseyan honored its two senior class members – Williams and Jackie Browne.
  • The 2015-16 season comes to an end for the Cardinals as they finish the season with a 7-15 overall record and 1-9 conference mark.
