Women's Ice Hockey Ties NESCAC Rival Trinity 3-3 on Senior Day

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Wesleyan University women's ice hockey team celebrated their five seniors (Corrine Rivard, Lottie Barton, Laura Mead, Jenny Robinson, and Laura Corcoran) on Saturday as they hosted Trinity College in their penultimate home game of the year. The Cardinals and Bantams would play to a 3-3 tie, after an exciting overtime was unable to yield any goals for either side.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams played a scoreless first period, and neither team committed a penalty.
  • The Cardinals played excellent defense in the first period in front of Corcoran. Wesleyan's defense blocked and broke up numerous Trinity scoring chances.
  • The teams combined to score four goals in the second period.
  • The Cardinal were able to kill off three Trinity power plays. 
  • Trinity scored two third period goals to tie the game.
  • Corcoran made 40 saves in net for the Cardinals, while Sydney Belinskas made 35 for Trinity.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Madzie Carroll '17 got Cardinals on the board first as she rifled a shot top-shelf  over the glove hand of Belinskas with 4:16 gone by in the second. 
  • Wesleyan would increase their lead to 2-0 just over four minutes later at 8:12 as Jess Brennan '17 came from around the net and dropped a pass to the waiting stick of Jenny Robinson '16 who stuffed it through the pads of Belinskas.
  • Trinity would get on the board with 15:15 gone by as Melissa Maffoe took a pass from Kelcie Finn and got it past Corcoran.
  • The Cardinals would answer just over a minute later as Laura Mead '16 took a shot from right above the circle which was deflected in by Ellery Sarosi '17. Lottie Barton '16 was also credited with an assist on the goal, which gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
  • Trinity cut the Wesleyan lead to one when Lindsay Miller took a pass from Hannah Oganeku and was able to get it by Corcoran with 14:09 gone by in the third.
  • Just over two minutes later at 16:12, the Bantams tied the game an Shannon Farrell put one by Corcoran. The goal was Farrell's 10th on the season.
  • In overtime, Alex Horton '18 had two incredible scoring chances, but she shot one puck just wide of the net, and was stopped by the quick glove of Belinskas on the other attempt.
  • Though both teams had a few quality scoring chances in the extra frame, neither was able to convert as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

UP NEXT

  • The Cardinals will remain home as the face Little Three Rival Amherst College on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
  • Trinity will travel to Bowdoin on Fri, Feb. 20. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
