The Lead: Four different goals scorers helped lead the Wesleyan University women's ice hockey team to a dominating 4-0 victory over visiting Nichols College on Monday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Cardinals controlled the puck for the majority of the first period, as the took 19 shots and scored two goals.
- The first Wesleyan goal came at 12:01 when Abby Rutt '18 took a pass from Rachel Aronow '17 and set up Jess Brennan '17 who was waiting just outside the circle and rifled a shot past the glove hand of Bison goaltender Lindsay O'Connell. The goal is Brennan's fourth of the year.
- Rutt would net her second point of the period as her power play goal at 17:35 increased the home team's lead to 2-0. Gina Mangiafridda '19 and Jackie Kilar '19 registered assists on Rutt's first goal of the season.
- The home team continued its dominate play in the second as they increased their lead to 4-0.
- Cici Frattasio '18 scored her first goal of the season as the gathered the puck on the power play and rifled a shot into the back of the net at 15:49 for the 3-0 lead.
- A few minutes later, Hailey Sholty '17 made a great play as she scored a beautiful wrap-around goal, falling to her knees to bring the Wesleyan advantage to 4-0 at 16:33.
- Neither team would score in the third period, and the Cardinals would claim the 4-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan held a commanding advantage in shots, as they outshot Nichols by a 53-12 margin.
- Allegra Grant '20 notched the shutout win as she made 12 saves in net.
- O'Connell made 49 saves in the game.
- The Cardinals dominated the faceoff circle, winning 58 draws on the night.
UP NEXT:
- The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, January 6th as they will head to Colby to take on the Mules. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
- The Bison will return to the ice on Wednesday, January 11th as they will take on Johnson and Wales at 7 p.m.
