MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Andrew Finkelman '21 of the Wesleyan University men's tennis team pulled off an incredible upset Sunday, as he defeated the defending national champion and top-seeded Lubomir Cuba of Middlebury College in the semifinals of the ITA Regional Championships.
Finkelman won convincingly, as he defeated Cuba, the No. 1 ranked player in the country, by scores of 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the finals. Cuba also won the NCAA doubles title a year ago.
Unseeded entering the tournament, Finkelman reached the finals before his impressive run came to an end. He was defeated by ninth-seeded Brian Grodecki of Williams College 6-2, 6-4.
The Cardinals have a week off before returning to competition on Friday, Oct. 13 for the three-day MIT Invitational.
