NESCAC Unbeaten Streak Comes to an End as Volleyball Loses to Bates, 3-0

LEWISTON, Maine – The Wesleyan University volleyball team dropped its first NESCAC match of the season Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to Bates College 3-0 by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-23. The loss also snapped an eight-match win streak for Wesleyan, who is now 16-2 overall and 7-1 in league play. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Despite the loss, the 16-2 start is the second-best in program history for the Cardinals. Only the 1989 team posted a better record through its first 18 matches, as they went 17-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first set went back-and-forth often. Trailing 10-7, Wesleyan scored three unanswered as a kill from Madeleine Lundberg '19 knotted the game at 10 apiece. Later in the game, the Cardinals went on a 6-1 run to take a 22-19 lead, but Bates scored the final six points to seal the win.
  • Wesleyan led for much of the second set in another back-and-forth affair until a 4-0 run by Bates gave the home team a 16-14 advantage. The Bobcats led the rest of the way en route to another 25-22 win to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
  • In the third, Bates led from the beginning and took an 18-12 lead following a kill from Augy Silver. The Cardinals slowly cut into the deficit and a kill from Sarah Swenson '18 got the visitors within two (22-20). Bates responded with a 2-0 run to go ahead 24-20, and despite three unanswered points from Wesleyan, the home team held on and prevailed (25-23) to take the match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Stasie Litinsky '20 led the team with nine kills followed by Lundberg with seven. Nicole Hilton '20 and Harper Graves '21 each added six and Swenson finished with five.
  • Kaira Muraoka-Robertson '21 led the team with 20 assists, while Grace Rose '21 added 18. Defensively, Phia Bellizzi '21 led the squad with 19 digs and Olivia Guidotti '20 finished with 10.
