Women's Swimming & Diving Earns Three First-Place Finishes on Monday

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore Caroline Murphy reeled off a pair of first-place nods, and sophomore Hannah O'Halloran earned one first-place finish for the Wesleyan University women's swimming & diving team on Monday, as the Cardinals fell, 170-115, to NESCAC-rival Amherst during home-opening action in Middletown, Conn.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wesleyan posted a total of seven top-two finishes, as O'Halloran cruised through the water during the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall first with a time of 1:00.35, which cleared second place by 0.24 seconds.  
  • Murphy, who collected 22 points on the individual side for the hosts, never gets complacent in the pool and keeps improving on a daily basis, as the Gardiner, N.Y. native recorded first-place efforts in the 50 backstroke (28.01) and the 50 freestyle (24.98), along with tallying a runner-up performance during the 100 freestyle (54.59). The second-year collegiate swimmer now has four first-place finishes in individual-oriented events on the season.
  • The Cardinals' relay team of Murphy, senior captain Zoe Kerrich, junior Maela Whitcomb and sophomore Grace Middleton opened the meet with a second-place performance during the 200 medley relay (1:51.10).
  • Senior captain Emily Kessler registered an outstanding effort during the 1-meter diving event, grabbing second-place marks with a score of 175.88, while Whitcomb was the second swimmer to touch the wall in the 50 butterfly (26.45) and the third-place finisher in the 100 butterfly (1:01.61).
  • Sophomore Leah Cravitz showcased her talent in the 400 IM, clocking a time of 4:57.60, which was good for third place, and junior Julia Dietz swam an impressive race during the 50 backstroke, finishing in the No. 3 slot (28.50).
  • Freshman Zoe Darmon, O'Halloran, Middleton and Dietz competed as a unit during the 400 freestyle relay, as the women recorded the third-best time in the event with a mark of 3:42.73.

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals will have a little break from competition, as the squad has its sights set on the CT Cup Meet on Saturday, Dec. 2.
