Softball Defeats Wis.-Stevens Point, 8-1; Falls to Buffalo St., 6-3

THE BASICS:

The Lead: The Wesleyan University softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 8-1 victory over Wis.-Stevens Point, but Buffalo St. would snap the Cardinals' winning streak as it claimed a 6-3 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Pointers got on the scoreboard first as Jen Jacobson doubled home Katie Uhlenbrauck in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.
  • Kendall Carr '19 would score on a wild pitch in the top of the second to tie the game at one.
  • A three run third would give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead. Rielly Wieners '18 homered to left and a Rachel Kantor '19 double scored Carr and Jamie Hom '17.
  • Wesleyan would add to its lead in the fourth as Olivia Gorman '19 singled home Izzy Linzer '17, while a single from Carr would score Julie McDonald '18 and Gorman to give the Cardinals a six run lead.
  • McDonald, who pitched a complete game in the circle allowing three hits while striking out eight, added an insurance run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-1.
  • Wis.-Stevens Point would put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh, but McDonald retired the final two batters to seal the 8-1 win. 

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A three-run homerun by Cassandra O'Hern in the top of the first would give the Bengals a 3-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals would chip away at the Buffalo lead, as Wieners singled home Linzer in the bottom of the first to bring them to within two runs at 3-1.
  • In the top of the third, the Bengals loaded the bases, but Kantor was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run.
  • A walk to Jenna Putala '20 would force in Carr from third, and Hom would later score on a wild pitch to tie the game at three in the bottom of the fourth.  
  • Nicole Adams would hit a two-run homerun to centerfield to regain the lead for Buffalo St. in the fifth at 5-3.
  • Kaelee Lynch would hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to add an insurance run to the Bengals' lead, giving them a three run advantage.
  • Allie Block would retire Wesleyan in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the 6-3 win. 

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals return to the field tomorrow, March 22nd as they will face Plymouth St. at 9 a.m. and Carleton at 11:30 a.m.
