The Lead: Nick Miceli '17 pitched a one-hit shutout in game one, while the offense put up 11 runs in game two as the Wesleyan University baseball team swept a doubleheader against the University of La Verne by scores of 2-0 and 11-6 on Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- In what was a pitchers duel between Miceli and Chris Peres, the two teams combined for one hit and zero runs through the first five innings.
- The Cardinals would load the bases in the sixth thanks to a single from Ryan Earle '19 and walks to Matt Jeye '18 and Miceli. Danny Rose '19 would force a walk to score the game's first runs and give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.
- Another walk to Ellis Schaefer '17 would force in Jeye to put the Cardinals up 2-0 in the sixth.
- Miceli would hold the Leopards scoreless and Wesleyan would claim the shutout win.
- Peres went 5.2 innings allowing one hit and two runs, while Miceli went 7 innings and allowed no runs one hit while striking out eight.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Peres would put La Verne up 1-0 in the bottom of the first with an RBI single through the right side.
- Earle and Jeye would single home a run each in the third to put the Cardinals on top by one with a score of 2-1.
- In the bottom of the inning, the Leopards would score twice to regain the lead at 3-2.
- Once again, Wesleyan would respond as it put up two runs of its own in the fourth as Andrew Keith '19 and Will O'Sullivan '17 notched RBIs to take 4-3 advantage.
- The Cardinals would add a run the fifth as Rose doubled home Earl to make the score 5-3.
- Keith would score on a single by O'Sullivan in the sixth to give Wesleyan a 6-3 lead.
- La Verne would get to within one run in the bottom of the inning as Ashton Edior singled home two runs.
- A five run eighth would put the Cardinals ahead 11-5. Jonny Corning '20, Keith and O'Sullivan all knocked in runs with singles, while Miceli scored two with his single up the middle.
- An RBI groundout by Jacob Benson would make the score 11-6 in the bottom of the eighth, but that's as close as the Leopards would get as Wesleyan would claim the win.

- The Cardinals will return home to Middletown, Conn., and will host Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday, March 29th at 4 p.m.
