MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – JR Bascom '18 recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds as the 14th-ranked Wesleyan University men's basketball team cruised to a 68-50 win over Bates College Friday night in NESCAC action.
Bascom was joined in double-digits by Jordan Bonner '19 with a game-high 16 points and Jordan Sears '18 with 10 as the Cardinals improved to 15-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Jeff Spellman was the lone Bobcat to score double-figures as he finished with 10 points. Bates drops to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the NESCAC.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Cardinals came out hot to start the game and scored eight unanswered in the first 2:53 of play.
- Bates was held scoreless until the 16:51 mark when a three-pointer by Spellman put the Bobcats on the board.
- The visitors got within three, 13-10, but Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run capped off by a three from Antone Walker '21 with 10:52 on the clock to go ahead by 10.
- Ahead 27-17, the Cardinals went on another run as they scored 10-straight to take a 20-point lead with 1:29 remaining.
- Spellman hit a jumper with :53 on the clock to cut the deficit to 18 as Wesleyan took a 37-19 lead heading into the break.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan continued to increase its lead in the second half and a layup by Jordan James '21 with 15:36 remaining put the home team ahead by 25 (48-23).
- Minutes later, the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run to go ahead by 28 with 9:18 left, essentially putting the game out of reach.
- A three-pointer by Malik Velmar in the closing seconds (0:49) proved to be the final basket as Wesleyan claimed the decisive 18-point victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Cardinals controlled the glass, outrebounding Bates 53-26, while also outscoring the Bobcats 34-14 in the point.
- Nathan Krill '18 joined Bascom with 10 rebounds while Sears and Bonner each pulled in eight. Sears, who was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor, also dished out three assists and recorded two steals and two blocks.
- Spellman scored 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Nick Lynch added eight points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, and Shawn Strickland dished out three assists.

- The Cardinals return to the court tomorrow, Jan. 27 and will host Tufts at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, Wesleyan will honor its three-member senior class—JR Bascom, Nathan Krill, and Jordan Sears.
