Field Hockey Falls at No. 1 Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. –  The Wesleyan field hockey team (4-9, 0-8) fell 11-1 on the road at No. 1 Middlebury on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The hosts jumped out to the early lead, opening the scoring 3:17 into the contest on a goal by Julia Richards inside the right post.
  • The advantage doubled five minutes later, as Marissa Baker swept in a pass from Erin Nicholas. Baker struck again with 18:41 on the clock, lifting a rebound into the upper portion of the cage immediately after Wesleyan's Olivia Baglieri recorded a defensive save.
  • Middlebury scored twice more by the end of the half, with goals by Nicholas and Danielle Brown, making it 5-0 at the intermission.
  • The Panthers added six tallies in the second stanza, extending the advantage to 11-0 with 1:47 remaining.
  • Wesleyan's Erica Horowitz spoiled the shutout bid with 1:09 left in the game, sweeping a shot into the lower-left side of the Middlebury goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Cardinal goalkeeper Delaney Wood (26:19) finished with four stops, while Caitlin Grant recorded three saves during 43:41 of play.
  • In goal for the Panthers, Megan Collins and Grace Harlan each played a half with Collins recording one save.  

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals return home for their final two games of the regular season. On Saturday, the team will celebrate Senior Day as they host Amherst at noon.
