Wesleyan Suffers 4-0 Setback at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team (3-2-0, 1-1-0) suffered a 4-0 setback at Williams (4-2-0, 2-2-0) on Sunday afternoon. The teams split the series, with the Cardinals blanking the Ephs 3-0 on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play 15:12 in, Williams' Meghan Halloran controlled the puck on the right circle, before finding Brynn Puppe who tucked it inside the near post for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Williams added a second tally with 1:06 remaining in the first after a centering pass from Eliza Quigley. Bri Laycock one-timed Quigley's pass from the doorstep, making it 2-0 heading into the break.
  • The Cardinals had a flurry of opportunities during the opening minutes of the second frame on a power-play, but the Eph defense clamped down and denied the chances.
  • The Ephs cashed in on a power play, extending their lead to three (3-0), when Annie Rush pushed in a rebound with 15:24 expired.
  • Wesleyan's Grace Keogh looked to get the Cardinals on the board at the 11:33 mark of the third period, but her tip-in attempt sent Eph goaltender Chloe Heiting sprawling to thwart the chance.
  • Williams increased its advantage to 4-0 with 15:04 expired when Rush redirected a shot by Halloran for her second goal of the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sam Smith recorded a career-high 46 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Heiting was forced to make just nine stops to pick up the win in net for the Ephs.

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals have a quick turnaround, hosting Endicott on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
