Men's Soccer Falls to Hamilton in Overtime, 1-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan's men's soccer (2-5-0, 1-3-0) team was edged 1-0 by Hamilton (5-3-0, 3-2-0) in overtime on Saturday. Both teams were determined to come out on top, as the contest saw 29 fouls and three yellow cards.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Cardinals had an opportunity to tally 21:57 into the frame after Sam Serxner served a corner kick into the box. Cameron Park rifled a shot on goal, but Hamilton's goalkeeper Thomas Benson came up big with a save.
  • The Continentals had back to back scoring chances during the 30th minute, but were unable to put the ball away, keeping the match scoreless.
  • Hamilton's best opportunity came at the 60:08 mark when Roth Wetzel sent a through ball to Aidan Woof from mid-field. Wood connected with the pass, challenging Cardinal goalkeeper Chris Franklin one-on-one, but Franklin forced Wood outside and his shot went just wide right of the goal.
  • Wesleyan had a great chance at the 74:49 mark after Jack Pironti's initial blocked shot. Tucker Kelsch volleyed the rebound toward the upper left corner of the goal, but soaring-Benson thwarted the opportunity.
  • The lone goal of the game came 5:59 into overtime when Noah Giovannelli connected with the ball on the left post. Giovannelli headed the ball into the box, before Sam Dils one-timed it into the upper left corner for the 1-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The game was very evenly matched, with both teams shooting 17 times and each taking three corner kicks during the contest.
  • Franklin six saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Benson had nine stops for Hamilton.

  • The Cardinals continue NESCAC play on Tuesday when they entertain Trinity at 4:30 p.m. on Jackson Field.
