MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan field hockey (3-5, 0-4) team was edged 2-1 by No. 14 Hamilton on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Cardinals held the Continentals (7-1, 4-1) to just two goals on 37 shots during the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hamilton looked to get on the board during the 18th minute, but back to back shots by Tatiana Bradley and Maddie Beitler were thwarted by a diving-Delaney Wood, keeping the game scoreless.
- The Cardinals struck first, taking a 1-0 lead after capitalizing on a penalty corner by Rachel Pomerantz. Olivia Baglieri stopped the insert, before Nikki Gerjarusak tipped the ball into the bottom left of the cage at the 25:45 mark.
- After the break, the Continentals came out strong, taking six shots in the first four minutes. Their best opportunity came at the 39:44 mark, but Baglieri made a defensive save to deny Guittari's opportunity.
- Hamilton knotted the game at the 55:50 mark when Lizzie Clarke one-timed a pass from Keeley Duran, before finding the goal through traffic for the equalizer.
- Wesleyan looked for the advantage at the 57:54 mark, following another Pomerantz penalty corner. Baglieri stopped the insert and hit hard shot on goal, but Hamilton goalkeeper Julia Booth extended her right hand to bat the ball down.
- The Continentals found the equalizer with just 55 seconds remaining in the contest. Sarah Pierpont sent a pass from the near post to Giuttari, who slipped the ball into the cage for the 2-1 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Despite the outcome, Wood had a great game in goal for the Cardinals, making 21 stops. Booth was forced to make just three saves in the contest for Hamilton.
