No. 23 Wesleyan Shuts Out Mount Holyoke 4-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No. 23 Wesleyan women's soccer team recorded its third-straight shutout with a 4-0 triumph over Mount Holyoke (2-13-1) on Tuesday evening. The meeting was the 36th between the Cardinals and the Lyons, as Wesleyan now owns a 22-12-2 advantage in the series. The Cardinals improve to 9-2-2 with the victory, recording their most wins in a season since 2011. Rookie Grace Devanny scored a pair of goals during the contest and now leads the NESCAC with 10 and is second in the conference in points (21). 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Cardinals opened the scoring at the 20:31 mark. Katie Stewart Frizzell saved the ball from going out the end line, before sending a pass towards the penalty kick mark. Andi Wiley one-timed Frizzell's pass into the bottom right for the 1-0 edge.
  • Wesleyan made it 2-0 after an initial shot by Julia Meehan was denied by Mount Holyoke goalkeeper Maria-Lucia Delgado. Devanny collected the loose ball, before settling it and tucking it inside the left post at the 42:00 mark.
  • Just 1:21 later, Devanny struck again, one-timing a through ball from Frizzell to extend the Cardinal lead to 3-0.  
  • Out of the intermission, Wesleyan increased its advantage to 4-0. Danielle Soto beat a Lyon defender, before rifling a shot from the top of the 18 into the upper right corner of the goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sarah Hammond and Courtney Litts each played 45 minutes, as neither was forced to make a save.
  • Mount Holyoke's Delgado made 17 stops during the game.
  • Wesleyan held a commanding advantage in shots (48-0) and corner kicks (8-0).

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals travel to Trinity on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. contest, before wrapping up the regular-season on October 30th at Connecticut College.
