FITCHBURG STATE, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's basketball team cruised to a commanding 80-45 win over Fitchburg State in non-conference action Saturday afternoon as first-year guard Maggie Lee led the way with a game-high 16 points.
The Cardinals led 35-21 at halftime and held the Falcons to just eight points in the second and third quarters. Wesleyan is now 7-2 on the season while Fitchburg State dropped to 1-10.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- The teams exchanged points early and often in the first quarter.
- A 3-pointer by Marina Petruzzi at the 3:32 mark gave the visitors a 15-11 advantage but they wouldn't score the rest of the way and a layup from Catherine Coppinger cut the deficit to two entering the second quarter.
- With 4:57 to play in the second, a 3-pointer by Lee sparked a 15-2 stretch by the Cardinals as the first-year bookended the run with a pair of free throws with 51 seconds on the clock, giving the visitors a 34-18 lead.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- It was all Wesleyan in the second half.
- At the 6:48 mark of the third quarter, Caleigh Ryan hit one from behind-the-arc to extend the lead to 20 as the Cardinals led 43-23.
- Wesleyan continued to increase its lead and took a 55-29 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
- The visitors outscored Fitchburg State 25-16 in the final 10 minutes of action en route to the 35-point victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lee was joined in double-figures by Petruzzi and Maddie Clark with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Ryan corralled a team-high nine rebounds while Clark and Ava Tompkins led all players with four assists each. Petruzzi also recorded a game-high four steals.
- Angelina Marazzi led the Falcons with 12 points while Coppinger and Lindsay McDonald each added eight. Jadelen Harold led the team on the glass with nine boards while recording a team-high three steals, and Coppinger and Payton Holmes led Fitchburg State with three assists each.

- Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 4 and will play at Babson in the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
