MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's basketball team lost its regular season finale on Sunday afternoon against No. 5 Bowdoin in Silloway Gymnasium, 83-50.
The Cardinals are 14-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play. They earned the No. 8 seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will play at top-seeded Tufts on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. The Polar Bears, who were led by Sela Kay's 25 points, improved to 22-2 and 8-2. They earned the No. 3 seed in the conference championship and will host sixth-seeded Hamilton next Saturday at 3 p.m.
Prior to the game, Wesleyan head coach Kate Mullen and the Cardinals honored their two senior class members, Heidi Scarth and Ava Tompkins.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- Bowdoin jumped out to a 13-6 lead but Wesleyan rallied with six unanswered as a layup from Emma Roush cut the deficit to one at the 3:20 mark.
- However, the Polar Bears closed out the quarter on a 10-0 run.
- Bowdoin came out hot to start the second quarter, hitting three-straight 3-pointers, including two from Kay, to pull ahead 32-15.
- The visitors continued to pull away and took a 49-27 lead into the half.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- Petruzzi hit one from deep just 10 seconds into the second half and then made a nice drive to the basket for a layup to go on a 5-0 run single-handedly.
- However, Maddie Hasson scored a minute later and it was all Bowdoin the rest of the way.
- A strong third quarter performance by the visitors gave them a 71-34 lead entering the fourth, essentially putting the game out of reach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Petruzzi finished with 16 points and four rebounds for the Cardinals. She was joined in double-figures by Maddie Clark who totaled 14 points, two assists, and two steals. Scarth and Katy O'Connor led the team in rebounds with five each.
- Kay went 7-of-14 from downtown as she dropped a game-high 25 points. Samantha Roy added 17 points and Hasson scored 14. Hasson and Dorian Cohen each corralled eight boards and Roy led all players with seven assists.
- Bowdoin's stifling defense recorded 16 steals.
