3-0 is the best start for the Cardinals since 1998-99

NEWPORT, RI – Women's hockey keeps their undefeated season alive, beating Salve Regina by a score of 3-1. The Cardinals were in control from the first period, scoring three unanswered to start the game before Salve Regina put one through in the third period to avoid the shutout. Caroline Mezias '25 netted her first goal of the season to start the scoring for the Cardinals seven minutes into the contest.

Wesleyan moves to 3-0 on the year, their best start to a season since 1998-99. That was a season in which they won 15 games, making the ECAC tournament. Salve Regina drops to 1-6 on the year.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Wesleyan jumped on Salve Regina early, scoring in the first seven minutes. Caroline Mezias collected a rebound off a Bridget Cornell '23 wrist shot and was turned away initially, but got her own rebound and managed to beat the Seahawk goalie
  • Wesleyan poured in 19 total shots for the period, but were unable to find the back of the net for the second time. A penalty to end the 1st left the Cardinals on the defense for the final 1:30 of the period
  •  The Cardinals survived the women-down for the remaining few seconds to start the 2nd period and went right back to work on the attack. Caroline Jenkins '23 pushed the pace, going one on two into the attacking zone. She went into her move but was body checked, creating Wesleyan's only power play chance. They produced a handful of shots, however the Seahawks defense held strong
  • Wesleyan put through their second goal of the game later in the 2nd period. After a battle along the boards for the puck, it was sent out to Jenna Stevens '24 who beat the goalie with a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal. She was assisted by Brooke Keough '23 and Chiara Christie '23 on the play
  • Wesleyan scored their third unanswered goal early in the 3rd period when Brooke Keough beat the Seahawks' goalie from point blank range. She was assisted by Christiana Tournas '25
