CLINTON, New York – The Wesleyan men's squash team took part in three matches – all at Hamilton College – over the weekend. The Cardinals' dropped all three matches in their season-opening weekend as Wesleyan fell to St. Lawrence 9-0, Hamilton 7-2 and Hobart 8-1.
ST. LAWRENCE HIGHLIGHTS (9-0 loss) | RESULTS
- Ethan Yan '25 gave Vladimir Iglesias trouble in the #5 position as the first-year fell in two tight games at 15-13, 12-10 before dropping the third game 11-6
- Andrew Doucette '22 competed in the #9 as the final margin in all three games was four points or less (11-8, 11-7, 11-9) in a match against Dean Brooker
- Kevin Angulo '24 won in an exhibition match at #10 as he defeated Henry Worden 11-7, 13-11, 11-9
HAMILTON HIGHLIGHTS (7-2 loss) | RESULTS
- Abhinav Gupta '25 and John Sutherby '23 won their respective matches to account for the two Cardinal points
- Gupta toppled Waleed Nisar in a four-game match at #2 as the first-year lost the opening game 11-6 before roaring back with three straight wins at 11-5, 11-9, 12-10 to claim the match victory
- Sutherby won the opening two games against Rufus Somerby at #3 12-10, 11-5 before dropping a 11-9 decision in the third game only to come back and take the match with a 11-8 decision in the fourth game
- Toby Goldston '24 was denied a win despite a great match at #4 as he took William Rice to five games. Goldston lost the first game 11-4 before winning the next two at 11-9, 11-4 but Rice then answered back with 11-8, 11-7 victories to take the match
- Yan (#5) and Morgan Shatzman '25 each took one game apiece in their respective matches but lost in 3-1 decisions
HOBART HIGHLIGHTS (8-1 loss) | RESULTS
- Yan claimed his first win of the weekend at #5 as he defeated Sayf Elhawary in a 3-2 decision, taking the fourth and fifth games by a scoreline of 12-10 and 15-13, respectively, as the first-year pulled out a thrilling victory
- Doucette lost in five games at #9 to Cameron Temoyan (9-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-7, 11-2) while Gupta, Sutherby and Jack Lungstrum '25 each won a game in their respective matches
- Angulo won his second exhibition match of the weekend at #10 as he toppled Quran Davis 7-11, 11-5, 16-14, 4-11, 11-8 in five games
