MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's squash team toppled Conn. College, 8-1, on Wednesday night in the Cardinals' 2021-22 home opener. Wesleyan (2-3) made quick work of the Camels (2-4) to snap a three-match losing streak.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Laila Kewalramani '24 and Anika Kewalramani set the tone with wins at #1 and #2, respectively, as Laila defeated Rachel Matamoros 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 while Anika defeated Isabel Schumacher 11-9, 11-7, 11-5. This marked the first collegiate win for Laila.
- Portia Pliam '25 won easily at #4 over Liliana Vazquez, taking a 3-0 sweep behind game scores of 11-1, 11-7, 11-2
- Sydney Smith '25 recorded her first career win, taking down Johanile Hurtado 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7 at #5
- Sydney's sister Emma Smith '22 prolonged what was already a great night for Wesleyan with a 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 win at #6
- The Cardinal senior class of 2022 - Annie Roach '22 (#7), Sydney Kim '22 (#8) and Aashni Parikh '22 (#9) – each won their respective match to finish off the 8-1 win. Roach won in a tight 3-0 decision while Kim took a 3-1 victory and Parikh dominated with a 3-0 sweep
- Celia Penny '24 finished off the night with a 3-0 sweep in an exhibition match at #10

Wesleyan heads into the winter break and will return to action on Saturday, January 15-16 with three matches all at Amherst starting with Franklin & Marshall on Jan. 15.
