Baseball Stymied in Series Finale at Hamilton

Hamilton overcomes 2-0 deficit to win the weekend series over the Cardinals

CLINTON, N.Y. – For the third straight game, the Wesleyan baseball team took an early first inning lead, but for the second time in the weekend series, the Continentals came-from-behind to claim victory over the Cardinals. On Sunday afternoon from the Loop Road Complex in Clinton, Wesleyan (2-4) led 1-0 after one and 2-0 after two, but were held scoreless for the remainder of play and Hamilton (2-4) used a two-run fifth and seventh inning to take the 4-2 win.

Highlights
  • Ryan Molinari '22 got things started for Wesleyan with a leadoff single to start the game and later came around on a two out, bases loaded walk from Kyle Sylvester '22 that made it 1-0 Cardinals
  • In the second, Wesleyan tacked on another two-out run as Molinari doubled this time, setting the stage for Jack Nally '24 who singled down the left field line that plated a second Cardinal run
  • Cardinal starting pitcher Adam Bowler '23 was making quick work of the Hamilton order, going four scoreless innings while retiring nine of 11 batters in the second through fourth inning to keep Wesleyan out front
  • Hamilton, however, eventually got to Bowler as the Continentals loaded the bases with no one out in the fifth before plating two as Derek Jann '24 did his best to limit the damage in relief as runs came across on a sacrifice fly and balk as the score was tied 2-2 after five
  • The game was decided in the seventh as a leadoff home run by Schlaefer-Ross put Hamilton out in front for the first time on the afternoon and the Continentals added insurance in the form of an RBI single up the middle from Slinger to make it 4-2
  • Wesleyan's lineup continued to struggle against the Hamilton bullpen as Kastner closed the door, retiring nine straight Cardinal batters to win the game and weekend series
NOTES
  • The top of the Wesleyan lineup in Molinari (2-for-5, one double, two runs) and Nally (2-for-4, 1 RBI) came up with four of the six hits on the game for the Cardinals
  • Nally collected six hits with 3 RBI over the weekend, as the first-year is batting a team-leading .409 through six games on the season
  • Bowler was solid in his 4.0 innings of work to start the game, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts
  • Less than 20 hours removed from recording the final out of last night's 4-3 home win, Jann pitched 2.0 innings and took the loss, surrendering the two seventh inning runs for Hamilton
  • Ian Appleby '24 closed the game, throwing the final two innings, allowing no runs on just one hit and one walk
