Men’s Tennis Rolls Past Hamilton, 8-1

CLINTON, N.Y. – It was a dominating performance from the Wesleyan men's tennis team on Saturday as the Cardinals toppled the Continentals, 8-1, from the Tietje Family Tennis Courts. Wesleyan concludes the regular season with a 3-2 overall record and 2-2 mark in NESCAC West Division play while Hamilton finishes 0-4 in the shortened 2021 spring season.

NOTES
  • Wesleyan swept the doubles matches for the third time this season as the Cardinals won the three matches by a combined score of 24-6
  • Noah Lilienthal '22 and Ben Mitchell '24 defeated Max Zimmerman and Rob Dotterer at No. 1 by a score of 8-3 as the Cardinals' top doubles pairing moved to 4-1 on the season
  • Marcus Sweeney '21 and Zach Lieb '22 were first to finish their doubles match at No. 2 as the duo defeated Danny Tsyvin and Joe Reiner 8-1
  • Zach Fleischman '21 and Harry Portnoy '24 completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory over Eamon Gibbons and Eric Stein at No. 3
  • Singles play largely was much like the doubles matches as Wesleyan won five of the six matches in straight sets
  • Portnoy was first to finish at No. 6 as he almost claimed a clean sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jafar Sharipov
  • Mitchell was right behind at No. 5 as the first-year took down Tim Derby 6-2, 6-1
  • Fleischman continued to roll as he dominated Reiner 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 and Lilienthal toppled Zimmerman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1
  • Lieb had a back-and-forth opening set with Dotterer at No. 2 before pulling out the 7-5 win and the junior carried that momentum into the second set with a match-sealing 6-1 win
  • Sweeney fell in his singles match as he took Stein into a third set tiebreak at No. 4 before ultimately losing by a set score line of 6-3, 2-6, 10-4
