Kuslak Dominates, Leading Volleyball to 3-0 Home Sweep of Conn. College

Brina Kuslak '22 recorded a career-high 15 kills on 22 attempts for a stunning .591 attack percentage

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - After a week of adversity and injury, Wesleyan volleyball managed to overcome and secure their second consecutive league win, this time over Connecticut College in a Thursday night matchup from Silloway Gymnasium. The Cardinals played three steady sets to win by scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 25-16. This win puts the Cardinals at 2-1 in the NESCAC and 5-1 overall while the Camels sit at 0-3 in the NESCAC and overall. 
 
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Conn. College came out strong in the first set leaving Wesleyan to fight hard with first-year setter Maya Lopansri '25 leading the offense. The Cardinals and Camels were nearly neck-and-neck for almost 20 points until the Cardinals pulled away with a 4-0 run, all on Lopansri's serve, to seal the win at 25-20. 
  • With another closely-played game in the second set, Wesleyan had to stay focused to fight point for point with the Camels. Similarly to set one, a late service run, this time from Grace Bell '23, pushed the Cardinals to another 25-20 victory. 
  • The final set of the match was explosive for the home team, and the Cardinals finally got an early lead with a score of 7-1 in the first three rotations. Riding this momentum ad feeding off a strong home crowd, the Cardinals saved the best for last and took care of the Camels 25-16. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Brina Kuslak '23 was absolutely dominant for the Cardinals as an attacker,  hitting a career-high .591 with 15 kills on 22 attempts. Lopansri totaled 35 assists in her first full match setting for Wesleyan. 
  • Wesleyan's defense did a good job in the back court with 61 digs against 118 attempts by the Camels. Libero Jenna Otaola '22 led in digs with 13, and Lopansri was close behind with 10. 
  • Lopansri recorded a double-double with her 35 assists and 10 digs in her first career start.
  • Wesleyan moves to 33-19-1 all-time and 15-4 at home against Conn. College. The Cardinals have also won five straight meetings dating back to 2016.
  • Leading the offense for the Camels was Katherine Randall with 11 kills on 30 attempts and only four errors. Libero Julia Dailey got 18 digs for Conn. College, and Randall added 12 digs on the defensive end.
UP NEXT: 
  • Wesleyan will be back in Silloway this Saturday with a doubleheader against Kean at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
