Men’s Tennis Opens Season with ITA New England Regional

BRUNSWICK, Me. – Featuring a host of newcomers, the Wesleyan men's tennis team opened the 2022-23 season at the ITA New England Regional over the weekend, hosted by Bowdoin College.

Three first-years featured for Wesleyan in singles and doubles play at the regional event, with the top performances being round of 16 trips for Harry Collomb '26 in singles and a pair of doubles victories for Ben Mitchell '24 and JT Bilski '26.

Collomb opened his collegiate career with a victory over Simon Volkema of Williams, 6-4, 6-2, before topping Derek Shen of MIT 7-5, 6-3, making it to the round of 16. In that match, Collomb's run came to an end as he fell to Pieter Breuker of Bowdoin 6-3, 6-4.

In other singles action, Bilski was the only other Cardinal to win a match as he defeated Aidan Jensen of Colby Sawyer (6-1, 6-3) before being eliminated in the round of 32 by Tufts' Derin Acaroglu in straight sets.

Another round of 16 trip for Wesleyan came in doubles play as Mitchell and Bilski combined to defeat Chen Liang and Jack Goldstein of Brandeis 8-4 in the round of 32 following a first roud bye. In the round of 16, however, their run came to an end in a tight 8-6 decision to Andrew Chong and Simon Volkema of Williams.

In other doubles action, Collomb and Tai MacDonald '26 defeated Zach Ostrow and Micah Elias of Amherst 8-5 in the round of 64 before dropping an 8-6 decision to Cameron Kania and Alexander Gujarathi of Bates.

Wesleyan heads to the MIT Invitational next weekend for a three-day tournament starting on Friday, October 7.
